The patient went to many hospitals in Cambodia and found malignant colon tumors. However, not believing in the results of diagnosis and doctor's orders at home, the patient went to Vietnam to fully re-examine and agree to surgery as directed by the doctor.

The patient was admitted to City International Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) on October 23 and tested, X-ray, CT abdomen, ... and found out the patient had a Malignant tumor of splenic flexure.. Doctors conducted early consultation and ordered laparoscopic surgery to remove the left colon segment containing the tumor for the patient.

After a 3-hours surgical procedure, the surgeon successfully took out the part of the colon with the cancer in which contained a giant cancerous tumor 1 kg in weight. After the surgery, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for follow up care and effective recovery.

Seven days of surgery, the patient had been fully recovered, the incision was dry and ready to be discharged. Although the tumor has spread out and metastases, the patient will continue on  additional chemotherapy after surgical removal of colon metastases.

Assoc.Prof.Dr.Nguyen Tan Cuong and Nguyen Bao Xuan Thanh II MD during patient visit before patient discharge.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr.Nguyen Tan Cuong, Head of General Surgery Department at City International Hospital: Colon cancer progresses slowly and metastases later than other types of cancer. If detected and operated early when the cancer has not reached the serosa, 5-year Survival Rates (%) is 80-90%. In Vietnam, patients often discover the disease very late, so the survival rate over 5 years is very low.

“In this case, due to very large colon tumor, the intestinal cavity is almost completely closed. At the same time causing diffuse inflammation, sticking to the spleen and adjacent splice, so the surgery must be very careful, tumor analysis because it is easy to bleed. In the case of N.B patients, if they do not have surgery to remove the tumor in time, they can cause intestinal obstruction and death, ”Dr. Cuong evaluated.

Dr. Cuong recommended, The signs of Cancer of the Colon and Rectum are often ften vague so are easily overlooked. Patients may feel abdominal pain but easily confused with other gastrointestinal diseases. However, when signs of unexplained weight loss appear, the disease has progressed to a more advanced stage. Patients should be well alert and go for medical examination and treatment early. or large tumors that cause bowel obstruction, such as N.B patients, surgery is needed to avoid potentially fatal complications.
